Waste heat: from waste to resource

Norwegian industry and data centres generate significant amounts of waste heat. Heat recovery can reduce both costs and emissions.

Large parts of Norwegian industry emit low-temperature heat that could be recovered. The same applies to data centres, where cooling demand generates heat well suited for local distribution to commercial buildings, residential areas or the process industry.

The technology is mature. The challenge more often lies in the geographic proximity between source and offtaker, contractual arrangements for delivery and pricing, and the design of heat-pump solutions that raise the temperature to a usable level.

Several Norwegian projects have shown that payback periods can be short when government support, CO2 pricing and local district heating networks are in place. SustEvo works on mapping and designing such solutions together with industrial customers.
